Mark George Essey

Position: Director
Qualifications: B.Com, B.Com Honours, ACMA
Experience: Mark graduated with his B. Com degree in 1992. After working for a steel fabrication and construction company for 5 years and having attained the position of Financial Director he resigned to further his studies full time. A year later he graduated with his B.Com Honours degree and sat for the Chartered Institute of Management Accountants board exam in the first half of 1999, which he passed and attained the CIMA qualification.

In January 1999, Mark joined FNB in the role of Assistant Financial Manager, and was made a Financial Manager 6 months later. In July of 2000 Mark left FNB to pursue a dream of working on the stock exchange, and he Joined Anglorand Securities as a Private Client Stockbroker.

In May 2002 Mark left Anglorand and rejoined FNB heading up the MIS area for the Electronic Banking Division. In this role Mark was successful in building a fully functioning and robust MIS and Activity Based Costing system for Electronic Banking, something that had not been done before.

Mark was approached to join the Debtor Finance division at FNB in October of 2003, which he did. At Debtor Finance, Mark headed up the operations area and also played a sales support role.

Mark left Debtor Finance in July 2006 to join his father-in-law in a retail property development business called Flanagan & Gerard. At Flanagan & Gerard he was actively involved in the sourcing of new development projects, leasing of space in the developments that Flanagan & Gerard are developing and was responsible for the asset management of the various investments that Flanagan & Gerard have in a number of regional shopping centres. Mark left Flanagan & Gerard in July 2008 to manage Debt-IN on a full time basis.

Mark and his wife Gayle also own a business, Mango Products, which retails yoga and related products online.

Ian Fleming

Position: Director
Qualifications: B.Compt, B.Com Honours, CA (SA)
Experience:

In 2001 Ian qualified as a Chartered Accountant (SA), having served his articles at Deloitte and Touche.  He then joined CMS Group, a financial services business that specialised in credit management, offering professional advice and outsourcing solutions to credit providers in the management and collection of corporate and consumer debt.  At CMS Group he played key roles in operations and finance, and performed extensive work in the fields of debtor book analysis, valuation and corporate turnarounds.  It was here that he learnt and gained his experience in the collections and recoveries business.

In 2003 he left CMS Group and spent 3 years in investment banking, whereafter he served as financial director of a large motor dealership group.  In March 2008 he joined his partners in establishing the debt recovery and distressed debt consulting firm Debt-IN.

Over the next 3 years, Ian and his partners built Debt-IN into a successful business recovering debt on behalf of major banks, development finance institutions, municipalities and other providers of credit and incidental debt.  Through their consulting services division they have assisted various companies with credit turnaround strategies and decision making in the management, acquisition and disposal of distressed assets.

Ian’s roles at Debt-IN comprise specialist credit consulting and business development.  Ian is a member of the South African Institute of Chartered Accountants.


John George Essey

Position: Director
Qualifications: B.Com, B.Com Honours, CA (SA)
Experience: John is a qualified Chartered Accountant with 10 years of professional experience. He has worked for employers in Professional , Diversified Industrial as well as the Financial Services Sector. John spent five years in London working in the Diversified Industrial and Financial Services Sectors for blue chip companies and has accumulated significant experience in working in diverse company environments and locations throughout Africa, Europe and the Middle East.

John completed his articles at Deloitte in their Johannesburg office in 2001. After his training contract he was seconded to the United States for a period of six months where he gained exposure to the regulatory environment of US multi nationals.

He then moved to London for a period of 5 years, 2 of which were spent at Honeywell International where he performed due diligences on business activities throughout Europe, the Middle East and Africa.

After this, John spent 3 years in London contracting in the Financial Services sector where he was exposed to asset valuations, capital restructuring and equity instruments.

John then moved back to South Africa where he has been involved in project finance and is currently an Associate Director at KPMG resident in their Johannesburg office. John has written numerous articles and has been featured in Finweek magazine in the latter part of 2007. He is currently involved in large government transactions particularly Public Private Partnerships.

Hena Sugudhav

Position: Director
Qualifications: B.Com, B.Com Honours
Experience:

Experience: Hena has built a strong reputation in Management Consulting at Debt-IN over a career spanning 14 years. Soon after completing her degree in 1997 at the University of KwaZulu-Natal, she started at Debt-IN as an agent in the call centre in 1998, where her duties included calling debtors, setting up payment arrangement plans and managing the database.

Within a month of working as an agent, Hena was promoted to the position of team leader. At the time, the call centre employed five agents, who all reported to her. In April 2009, Debt-IN expanded its operations and Hena was tasked with heading up the company’s largest banking collections team.

Due to her success in this area, Hena was promoted to Operations Manager where she was responsible for the agents in the call centre, allocation of work to the agents, as well as reporting to clients and client relationship management.

In September 2011, she was appointed as Operations Director, where she successfully manages the back office. In this position, Hena is responsible for allocation of work, client progress reports, liaising with potential new clients to brief them on Debt-IN policy and procedures. She actively reports on and manages the performance of the agents and is involved in training new and existing
agents.
